Abstract
Smart cities that were a dream have now become a reality. In order to improve performance and further implement smart cities, we need to further study autonomous vehicles, allowing us to deepen the notion of smart cities and driver comfort. Grouping autonomous vehicles in the form of Platoons increases road traffic and minimizes energy consumption. In this paper, an in-depth study of autonomous vehicles and in particular the communication between the vehicles within a Platoon has been made. In addition, existing communication technologies are discussed. We also identify the challenges and issues facing open, DSRC and C-V2X-centric connected autonomous vehicles and highlight future research directions that should be addressed.
