Abstract

New strategies to overcome the defects of conventional antibacterial ways are imminently required due to the rapid growth of bacterial resistance by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. The bioinspired superhydrophobic coatings as innovative scheme to prevent bacterial adhesion and infections have attracted increasing attention. The purpose of this review is to present recent advances and challenges related to the antibacterial superhydrophobic coatings. First, the formation of bacterial film and the hazard of bacterial infections are introduced. Subsequently, the concept and mechanism of antibacterial superhydrophobic coatings are explained. Moreover, the research progress of antibacterial superhydrophobic coatings based on metals and metallic oxides, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), and N ‐halamines are reviewed and summarized with a cutting‐edge perspective. Finally, the challenges and future research directions of the antibacterial superhydrophobic coatings are prospected with the expectation of providing guidance for the coming researches and applications.
