Abstract

The presence of pesticide residues in food products and water leads to adverse health and environmental effects. In an emerging field of research, a range of non-thermal physical techniques has recently been identified as suitable substitutes for the conventional pesticide residue removal method. These strategies not only exert no negative effects on food and water quality but also increase the shelf life of food products through inhibiting or eliminating harmful bacteria and toxins. This review focuses on the efficiency and mechanism of action of several non-thermal pesticide residue elimination techniques including cold plasma, pulsed light, electron beam, and electrolyzed water.
