Abstract
This chapter presents a comprehensive discussion on the challenges involved in thermal energy storage (TES), paving the way to create a wide range of opportunities in various applications in industries such as painting, buildings, automotive, heaters, coolers, boilers, etc. In the last decade, it is evident that the continuous reduction of conventional energy resources globally has led to the search for sustainable non-conventional energy resources and storage. This chapter aims to provide insight into challenges in storing thermal energy, technologies (sensible, latent heat, thermochemical) required for TES, and materials (phase change materials) required for TES devices and performances. In addition, this chapter also focuses on TES for solar systems that can revolutionize the energy industries. Further, the chapter concludes with a detailed discussion of recent developments in various applications and future research directions.
