Abstract
Isolated Cu<sup>2+</sup> ions actively participate in CO<sub>2</sub> hydrogenation. The reduced Cu<sup>2+</sup> ions form dispersed Cu sites which adsorb H<sub>2</sub> where CuAl<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> sites actively adsorb CO<sub>2</sub>.
