Assessing External Defects at Manufacturing Enterprises

Abstract
A method is outlined for calculating the components responsible for external defects in manufacturing. A classical quality-control tool is employed to analyze the defect sources and costs: the Pareto diagram. An example regarding gearbox production shows that the rankings of the defects in terms of frequency and the corresponding external losses are different. Therefore, the use of both diagrams is recommended in selecting corrective and preventive measures.
