• World systems theory, the precariat and rural restructuring are applied in this paper. • Long-term transformation of manorial settlements in Hungary is reinterpreted. • Manors have been places connected to international agricultural markets. • Precarity is a historically continuous feature of local society at these settlements. • Restructuring follows a different pace than in the case of other rural localities.
