Perspectives on important considerations in designing nanoparticles for oral delivery applications in food

Abstract
With rapid technological advancements in nanotechnology, it is important to revisit the knowledge of nanoparticles design and fundamental principles that have played major roles in the development of encapsulation and delivery technologies for food applications. In this perspective paper, important considerations for designing edible, safe, and effective nanoparticles for oral delivery of bioactive compounds in food products are highlighted. Physicochemical characterizations, biochemical evaluations, and biological assessments of biomaterials-based colloidal nanoparticles intended for food applications are particularly discussed to guide future research in this area.
