Diphtheria outbreak in Nigeria
Vijay Shankar Balakrishnan
Abstract
At a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital in Kano, Nigeria, Dr Hashim Juma Omar encounters at least six children daily with diphtheria symptoms, including the characteristic throat patches, swollen lymph nodes, fever, fatigue, and chills. “I've never seen [so] many serious diphtheria cases this frequently in my career,” Omar tells The Lancet Microbe. “Not just at our MSF hospital, but many in the region are seeing a flurry of patients, both children and adults, but the most at-risk being kids”.
