Abstract

Friction is essential for the proper functioning of a mechanical system . On the other hand, friction has a dissipative nature which destroys useful energy and reduces the efficiency of a mechanical system . The analysis of friction is thus an interesting area of research as it is an essential factor that helps improve any machine's performance. However, friction analysis is not easy because it depends on many factors. Therefore, many researchers have proposed different models for effective friction analysis for different mechanical systems. In this paper, a brief review of existing literature on the proposed friction models for various kinds of mechanical systems is presented. The current research status for static and dynamic friction models is covered, and numerical modelling and simulation of various friction models are discussed. Features of the models are highlighted to reveal the importance of the past technique with suggestions on future directions in friction analysis.
