Abstract

On April 17–21, 2023, over 200 participants gathered in Cape Town (South Africa) for the first face-to-face meeting of the mRNA Technology Transfer Programme, presided by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The week also marked the inauguration of the mRNA technology hub facility at Afrigen Biologics and Vaccines (henceforth Afrigen; Cape Town, South Africa). The programme, launched in 2021 as a response to the global COVID-19 vaccine access inequality, is a collaboration between WHO, Medicines Patent Pool, and private and public partners from 15 low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America.
