Abstract
The modern power grid is one of the greatest achievements of modern engineering, an intercontinental scale machine with thousands of generators and millions of customers interconnected by millions of miles of passive transmission and distribution network. The grid is the foundation of modern society, and we take it for granted. When one considers that the basic principles of operation have not changed in over 100 years and that these principles were formulated in an era before microprocessors and digital controls, we begin to appreciate the importance of the rules and principles that govern system behavior.
