Power Quality Enhancement Using Active Shunt Harmonic Filter Based on PV

Abstract

As conventional energy resources are depleting; the world is moving towards renewable energy sources to fulfill the power requirement. The most commonly used renewable energy source is solar and PV systems, which have attained great importance as a source linked to transmission networks. PV systems, when integrated with grids, create power quality problems due to using nonlinear electronic devices. To improve power quality, filters are necessary to clear out the harmonics and distortion and to improve the power factor improvement. SAPF (Shunt Active Power Filter) is needed to cancel out the system's undesired signals to balance the imbalance currents and reactive power compensation. SAHF (Shunt Active Harmonic Filter) is required for compensation of harmonics by producing equal but 180° in phase current. In this paper, PV based SAHF is analyzed with the help of MATLAB/ SIMULINK to reduce the current harmonics and provide load compensation. To extract maximal power, P&O (Perturbation & Observation) based technique is needed. The SAHF is created with VSI, and a controller offers a triggering signal for VSI (Voltage Source Inverter). This paper contains the system analysis with and without SAHF, and THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is measured using the FFT (Fast Fourier Technique) technique.
