An introduction to the Handbook of Critical Agrarian Studies

Abstract

Critical agrarian studies represents an emerging and vibrant field of research that unites scholars and activists from various disciplines concerned with understanding agrarian life, livelihoods, formations and their processes of change. This chapter surveys the origins of critical agrarian studies in the agrarian question and how the agrarian question and subsequently agrarian political economy shaped the emergence of peasant studies. It specifies the continuities and differences between peasant studies and critical agrarian studies. It then discusses the rationale for subdividing the field into six key thematic domains.
