Abstract

The development of future smart grids requires the seamless integration of cutting-edge industrial advancements, flexible grid technologies, and sustainable energy infrastructure, while aiming to enhance their resilience and achieve decarbonization objectives. Ensuring the successful transition necessitates a particular focus on integrating renewable energy sources (RES) such as solar and wind energy. This paper hinges on both the challenges and possibilities associated with incorporating RES into smart grids, for increased flexibility, resilience, and the impact on grid stability and power quality. The study holds significant importance in urging policymakers and utility providers to give priority to renewable energy sources (RES). It extensively examines the experiences of leading countries in this field, providing comprehensive comparative insights into critical factors such as cost savings, energy efficiency, and peak load management. These insights are drawn from globally recognized wind power projects, enhancing our understanding of the subject and serving as a compelling resource for decision-makers. The study explores the technical, economic, and regulatory dimensions, accompanied by real-world case studies and exemplary approaches of wind power integration in a smart grid context. It serves as a comprehensive resource, outlining the current state of the art in integrating renewable energy sources into smart grids, identifying key research gaps and challenges, and providing robust recommendations for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers alike.
