Abstract

Earth observation from space has proved to be an indispensable tool for providing valuable information on natural resources and environment including ocean and weather on various spatial and temporal scales. Oceansat-3 series of satellites will provide essential data continuity services to the Oceansat-2 data users with improved accuracy. Oceansat-3 satellite will carry a 13-band OCM-3 to replace the services provided by 8-band OCM-2 in Oceansat-2. More number of bands in OCM-3 is expected to provide better delineation of ocean features, identification of certain algal bloom species, and delineation of primary production in the coastal waters. Along with OCM-3 payload, Oceansat-3 will have a new payload, Sea Surface Temperature Monitor-1 with two discrete bands in thermal infrared providing sea surface temperature measurements. This paper summarizes the science requirements and payload configuration of OCM-3 and SSTM-1 payloads being realized for Oceansat-3 mission.
