Abstract

• Destabilization model and damage pattern of the excavated surface were discussed. • The influencing factors of shield tail gap grouting was analyzed. • Effects of settlement and buildings on the stability of shield tunnels were studied. • Control measurements of shield tunnel stability were studied. Over the past three decades, there has been a notable increase in the complexity of tunneling. Shield tunneling method has been widely applied for its advantages of safe construction, fast excavation, low labor intensity, low environmental impact, etc. Consequently, this study presents a review of the principal factors that affect the stability of shield tunnels. Firstly, the relevant research factors and directions regarding shield tunnel stability are delineated, the impact of adverse geological conditions on shield tunnel construction is discussed, and the influence of excavation surface construction on tunnel stability is analyzed. Additionally, the paper investigates the influence of shield tail gap filling on tunnel stability. Furthermore, the stability of the tunnel is contemplated based on ground settlement and existing buildings. Finally, the issues in the current research on shield tunnel stability and the direction for future studies are highlighted. The factors affecting tunnel stability are closely and intricately linked. During the construction process, it is essential to consider these factors in a comprehensive manner and implement effective measures to ensure the stability of the shield tunnel and the surrounding environment. These measures will help to guarantee the construction safety of the shield tunnels.
