Abstract
• Microtopography enhances arid ecosystem stability via soil moisture regulation. • Vegetation patch formation in microhabitats supports biodiversity conservation. • Targeted microtopography techniques improve ecological restoration efficacy. • Interactions between microfeatures and biogeochemical cycles sustain ecosystem functions. In arid regions, microtopographic features exert a profound influence on soil hydrological processes, biogeochemical cycles, and the composition of biocommunities, thereby playing an instrumental role in the protection and restoration of lands. The principal aim of this investigation is to thoroughly examine the impacts and underlying mechanisms of microtopography in arid areas, delineating its implications for ecological functions and furnishing a scientific foundation for the rehabilitation of ecosystems. Through the methodical employment of literature review, this investigation rigorously sifted and synthetized a vast array of pivotal studies addressing the ramifications of microtopography on the hydrology, biogeochemical cycles, and biocommunities in arid terrains. The findings indicate that the distinctive characteristics of microtopography markedly foster the accumulation and dispersion of soil moisture, which is vital for augmenting the stability and recuperative capabilities of ecosystems in arid domains. Furthermore, this inquiry provides an in-depth exploration of the ecological roles attributed to microtopography alongside the factors influencing them, whence it articulates a suite of strategies aimed at expediting the restoration of arid ecosystems. Conclusively, microtopographic attributes are elucidated as being critically significant within the ecosystems of arid regions. Grasping the ramifications and mechanisms of these attributes is quintessential for devising efficacious strategies for land conservation and restoration. This research proffers a holistic analysis concerning the significance of microtopographic traits in promoting ecosystem recovery within arid landscapes, proffering novel insights for ensuing scholarly endeavors.
