Blame and shame are harming our response to monkeypox
Duncan Shrewsbury
Abstract
monkeypoxOld stigmas are hampering how we understand, talk about, and respond to monkeypox, writes Duncan Shrewsbury Duncan Shrewsbury senior lecturer in general practiceNo sooner are we told to get used to living with the new normal of endemic variants of covid-19 than we are faced with another peril. The spread of monkeypox to the UK and other previously non-endemic countries has caused alarm.Just as worrying as the emergence of the virus in unexpected regions, however, is how it has reawakened harmful narratives about infectious diseases that I had hoped we'd left in the past.
