Abstract

An antenna shape synthesis method is proposed that allows the shape optimization of dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs). The use of characteristic mode concepts enables objective functions, which are to be minimized by the optimization algorithm through shaping of the DRA geometry, to be defined without having to commit to some specific feed location before shaping has been completed. This unfetters the optimization process and can lead to potentially new designs due to the increased degree of freedom afforded. The location of an appropriate feedpoint is selected as part of the shaping process. Examples are shown to illustrate the method both computationally and experimentally.
