Climate justice

Abstract

The evolving climate crisis is demonstrating with unequivocal clarity that the dream of unlimited economic growth driven by ever-increasing material consumption is, in fact, ensuring a living nightmare for the human species. In this chapter, we will argue that as citizens of this planet, we need to collectively and quickly pursue a new pragmatic ideal: climate justice (CJ). We will draw on social and environmental justice frameworks and indigenous perspectives to describe key aspects of CJ. Next, we will provide a critical analysis of some key issues, barriers and potential leverage points to be considered in the pursuit of CJ. For this, we will place strong emphasis on the analysis of neoliberalism and the need for transformative social change. The final section of the chapter will feature concrete approaches for working towards CJ, including those that community psychologists have been or could be involved in. In this section, strong emphasis will be placed on the role of visioning, the arts and prefigurative practice in societal transformation, and how we can facilitate these processes as community psychologists. Finally, we will argue that CJ is the logical response to the climate crisis for Community Psychology. Resumen La evolutiva crisis climática demuestra con claridad inequívoca que el sueño de un crecimiento económico ilimitado impulsado por el aumento des mesurado en el consumo de materiales es, de hecho, garantizar una pesadilla viviente para la raza humana. En este capítulo, argumentaremos, como ciudadanos de este planeta, que necesitamos de manera colectiva y rápida seguir un nuevo ideal pragmático: justicia climática (JC). Haremos uso de marcos de referencia sociales y de justicia ambiental, así como de perspectivas Indígenas para describir aspectos clave de la JC. Posteriormente proveeremos un análisis crítico sobre puntos clave, barreras, así como puntos influyentes a ser considerados en la búsqueda de la JC. Para esto pondremos un fuerte énfasis en el análisis del neoliberalismo y en la necesidad de un cambio social transformador. La sección final del capítulo presentará enfoques concretos para trabajar hacia la JC, incluyendo aquellos en que los psicólogos comunitarios han estado o podrían estar involucrados. En esta sección se le dará un importante énfasis al rol de visionar, las artes, y la prefiguración práctica en la transformación social, y cómo podemos facilitar esos procesos como psicólogos comunitarios. Finalmente, argumentaremos que, para la psicología comunitaria, la JC es la respuesta lógica a la crisis climática.
