Abstract
In the European Union, up to 4.6 million patients per year acquire a healthcare-associated infection (HAI) during their hospital stay, affecting 5.7% of all hospitalized patients and accounting for more deaths than all other infectious diseases combined. On average, HAIs consume around 6% of the public hospital budget. 4]
