Abstract

Driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and drugs is a serious health and social issue and a leading cause of death and disability. We present the findings of a scoping review of the literature that examined behaviors and risk factors associated with DUI as well as currently available preventative interventions. To truly impact DUI behaviors, prevention and intervention strategies must educate on both social perceptions and associated risks, consider the root cause behind excessive or hazardous use leading to DUI, and address the general mental health of our society at large as they turn to substances as means of coping.
