Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a contemporary global health challenge and one of the twenty-first century's most serious global health issues. AMR, sometimes known as a modern plague, threatens to undo decades of medical progress by rendering routine therapies useless. Thus, there is an open area of research to identify new, potential, and natural treatment options to combat AMR. The overwhelming contributions of the researchers are never ignored, and there is a massive literature available focusing on the entire spectrum of antibiotics, but considering a modern plague, this is less explored. Hence, this chapter gives an in-depth introduction to AMR, highlighting its main characteristics, historical background, mechanisms, causes, consequences, and potential remedies. Keeping in view the genetic evolution of mechanisms of resistance in microorganisms, this study aims to formulate comprehensive solutions to halt its spread, improve clinical practices, and promote sustainable utilization of antibiotics to enhance public health.
