Evaluation of Fragaria ananassa and Cucurbita pepo L Leaf Extracts as natural green corrosion inhibitors for copper in 0.5 M hydrochloric acid solution

Abstract

Open circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were used to evaluate the inhibition efficiency of Fragaria ananassa (strawberry) and Cucurbita pepo L (zucchini) leaf extracts on the corrosion of copper in 0.5 M Hydrochloric acid solution (HCl).Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed that both leaf extracts contain functional groups such as carbonyl groups, aromatic rings, and double bonds that make them good candidates for corrosion inhibition.Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed that both leaf extracts behave as cathodic-type inhibitors.Impedance responses show that the corrosion process occurred under diffusion control.Fragaria ananassa leaf extract is a better corrosion inhibitor for copper in 0.5 M HCl than Cucurbita pepo L leaf extract.Theoretical fitting of different adsorption isotherms was tested to clarify the mode of adsorption of these extracts on copper surface.Electrochemical studies were supported by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS).The obtained results revealed that the inhibiting action takes place through simple physical adsorption of the extracts' molecules on copper surface.
