Abstract

The global community failed to fulfil its promise to attain the millennium development goal (MDG) target for maternal mortality and is currently not on track to achieve the sustainable development goal (SDG) target by 2030. The latest maternal mortality estimates, covering 2000 to 2020, show little or no meaningful progress in maternal mortality reduction during the last decade of the report.1 This unusally slow progress might be related to the use of the same strategies applied during the MDG era to address maternal health problems in a world that has drastically and fundamentally changed since the adoption of the 2030 sustainable development agenda.
