Abstract

VS 2− x (V 2+ , V 4+ ) and VS 2 (V 4+ ) are prepared to investigate the effect of valence states of vanadium on the catalytic activity. The adsorption of N 2 molecules is exothermic on the V 4+ site, but endothermic on the V 2+ site. The spontaneous formation of *N 2 at V 4+ substantially boosts the ENRR.
