Observability: Logs, Metrics, and Traces
Radoslav Gatev
Abstract
Knowing what happens inside a system while it is running is beneficial for debugging, maintenance, and analysis purposes. In this chapter, we will explore the three pillars of observability – logs, metrics, and traces. You will learn what they are, how they are used, and what are the differences between them. After that, we will explore how Dapr allows you to put the telemetry data into practice by mostly leveraging the open standards such as the OpenTelemetry project. Then you will understand how to use various monitoring systems to collect, analyze, and visualize the information coming from Dapr and your applications.
