New Insights Into Sensory Impairment and Dementia Risk
Nicholas S. Reed, Esther S. Oh
Abstract
Elsewhere in JAMA Network Open, Hwang and colleagues 1 characterize the association of dual sensory impairment (eg, concurrent hearing and vision impairment) with risk of dementia in the longitudinal Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) cohort. Among 2927 participants without dementia at baseline, dual sensory impairment was associated with 2.60 times higher risk of incidence all-cause dementia (hazard ratio [HR], 2.60; 95% CI, 1.66-4.06) and 3.67 times higher risk for incident Alzheimer disease (AD) (HR, 3.67; 95% CI, 2.04-6.60) over an 8-year follow-up period.
