Abstract

T his manuscript presents an overview of the current scenario and challenges on dementia practice and research in Latin America (LA). We review the main demographic and socioeconomic indicators from LA, epidemiology and diagnosis of dementia, knowledge of dementia by the general public, by general practitioners (GPs) and by other health care professionals, costs of dementia, and the research on dementia in the continent. The main aim of this article is to integrate information regarding some of the action areas aligned by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2017) global action plan on the public health response to dementia [1], which will need to be addressed by the countries in the region, as they prepare their local dementia action plans.
