Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health care burden with an estimated global prevalence of 9.1% in 2017 (697.5 million cases), with China and India contributing to nearly a third of the total cases. The age-standardized rate of CKD has been increasing 1.2% per year since 1990.1 Approximately 1.2 million deaths are attributed to CKD, and it is the 12th leading cause of death globally. Although the global prevalence of dialysis was 0.04% in 2017, the incidence has grown by 43% since 1990.1 Despite improved access to kidney replacement therapy in the most recent decades, the global age-standardized kidney disease mortality rate has not substantially changed.
