Abstract

The power generated from photovoltaic systems is stochastic in nature, this demands for the use of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms in such systems. Here, the conventional perturb and observe (P&O) method suffers from the problem of local oscillations at the maximum power point. While, intelligent control technique like fuzzy logic control is a proven technique to render enhanced performance in nonlinear systems. Therefore, this paper presents an effort to differentiate the operating performance of a grid-connected solar photovoltaic system employing conventional P&O-based MPPT and fuzzy logic control-based MPPT. Various sub-systems associated with the considered 30 kW grid integrated solar PV system are modeled and a special emphasis is given towards the dc-dc converter control by employing P&O and fuzzy-based MPPT. The work further quantifies the PV system’s performance in terms of settling time and overshoot in the waveforms of output power and dc bus voltage with and without the fuzzy MPPT control. The presented simulation-validation justifies the enhanced performance of the fuzzy logic-based MPPT system in grid integrated solar PV applications.
