Abstract
In January, the secretariat of the \nConvention on Biological Diversity (CBD) \nreleased the first draft of a post-2020 \nglobal biodiversity framework with goals \nand targets for biodiversity (1, 2). We are \ndeeply concerned that the goal suggested \nfor genetic diversity—the basic element \nfor evolutionary processes and all biological diversity—is weak. Abundant scientific \nevidence recognizes the crucial role of \nintraspecific genetic diversity in ecosystem \nresilience, species survival, and adaptation, \nespecially under increased threats of climate change, habitat loss, and diseases (3). \nThe new goals should correct omissions in \nthe previous strategy document.
