Abstract
Biophysical cues of native extracellular matrix (ECM) can affect cellular behavior. Although static properties of biomaterials have been widely explored, there is a growing interest in dynamic and interactive biomaterials for the modulation of cellular behavior and fate. Native ECM is highly dynamic with mutual feedback between cells, which plays a key role in regulation of development, regenerative processes, and disease progression. Dynamic biomaterials based on material nanoarchitectonics emulate the dynamics and behavior of living systems. This review introduces the concept of material nanoarchitectonics and summarizes the recent advances of dynamic biomaterials based on material nanoarchitectonics from stimuli-responsive materials toward adaptable materials and the next generation of living materials. The opportunities and challenges in this field are also discussed.
