Gamma-Ray Interactions with Matter
Peter Karpius, T.D. Reilly
Abstract
Abstract This chapter describes the interactions that gamma-rays have with matter. The key interaction mechanisms described include the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, and pair production. The attenuation of gamma rays through matter is presented along with the concept of attenuation coefficients. The concepts of filtering and shielding is discussed for optimizing a gamma ray spectrum.
