Abstract

Laser-induced white light emission (LIWE) was observed for transparent Yb2O3 ceramics under a focused CW infrared irradiation. LIWE intensity was not stable, and interaction of the laser beam with the surface of the sample led to short (single or repeated) flashes of light. In some specific cases LIWE oscillations with frequencies in the range of 8-200 Hz were observed, while only one short high-intensive burst of light emission followed by generation of a stable LIWE was more common. To the best of our knowledge, we report here for the first time the effect of oscillations of the white light emission intensity under CW excitation. This instability was explained in the frame of the concept of multiphoton ionization and related to the saturation of white light-emitting centers.
