Abstract

The development and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in space applications is growing quickly as the consensus increases on the potential benefits introduced. As more and more aerospace engineers are becoming aware of new trends in AI, traditional algorithms and procedures are revisited to consider potential applications of AI in the context of space missions. Already, the scope of AI-related activities across academia, the aerospace industry and space agencies is too wide to review in-depth within this chapter. Thus we chose to focus on emerging trends in the field illustrated by research activities carried out within the European Space Agency’s Advanced Concepts Team. These trends focus on advanced topics that go beyond the simple transposition of established AI techniques to space problems as they require fundamental cross-fertilization between the two areas.
