Abstract

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most commonly used 3D printing techniques. FDM uses thermoplastics to manufacture the final product. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the use of composite materials in FDM 3D printing. It explores various filament manufacturing methods, highlighting extrusion techniques. The main advantages of using composite materials are discussed, then recycled composite filaments, their benefits, and the difficulties and possibilities related to their applications are covered. Next, the uses of composite filaments in aerospace, automotive, medical, electronics, and prosthetics/orthotics are explored. Finally, the review discusses the current challenges and suggests future directions for research.
