Writing with AI in and beyond teacher education: Exploring subjective training needs of student teachers across five subjects
Florian Hesse, Gerrit Helm
Abstract
AI is changing the way writing is learnt at university and taught in schools. Different institutions hence call for integrating programs on writing with AI in teacher education. These must be based on the needs of the participants, which are, however, still unexplored. This article fills this gap with findings from a February 2024 questionnaire study involving 505 student teachers across five subjects. Content analysis revealed that student teachers require fundamental training in using AI for writing. Nevertheless, some student teachers also expressed specific needs in relation to university and school writing, which indicates a heterogeneity concerning training interests. Finally, dependencies between the needs and students’ personal characteristics (e.g., subject, semester) were identified, aiding the development of tailored learning opportunities.
