Abstract

Abstract This review article describes the most recent studies carried out in the catalytic conversion of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (5‐HMF) in 2,5‐dimethylfurane (2,5‐DMF). In this way, the most novel catalytic materials are presented and their main results during 2,5‐DMF production through catalytic hydrogen transfer (CHT) by hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions and through hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction as commonly routes employed. Additionally, the optimized reaction conditions applying for each catalyst are discussed. Some future perspectives on the use of CHT and HDO processes in the 2,5‐DMF production from 5‐HMF as platform molecule in order to suggest new applications of pathways in the heterogeneous catalysis field are presented.
