Abstract

Introduction of planetary boundaries for representing the carrying capacity of earth has led to the concept of absolute sustainability. Accordingly, Science-based-targets (SBTs) have been introduced as a holistic and top-down initiative to guide companies towards reducing their environmental impacts. However, operationalization of SBTs requires structured, and bottom-up guidance. This paper first depicts critical factors for companies to stay profitable while moving towards SBTs. This paper then introduces a methodology to conduct product portfolio analysis with consideration of environmental impacts of products, market growth, and share (volume). A case study is used for the demonstration applicability and usefulness of the methodology.
