Abstract

Efficient power system planning and operations become more crucial and challenging tasks by adding new intermittency power generation sources for security assessment and electricity market operation; therefore, it needs a novel approach to address the unforeseen contingencies. This paper presents a methodology for contingency ranking using Performance Index (PI) to rank the severity of credible line outages. The proposed approach has been tested in the converted IEEE 24 bus power system in real-time on RSCAD/RTDS. An intelligent runtime environment is constructed in the RSCAD runtime interface to perform the line outage contingencies and record the voltage magnitudes and line flows. T he voltage and active power performance indices have been calculated based on recorded data. The severity of outages is ranked, followed by the highest index at the top. Since the ranking for each line tripping is not the same, Overall Performance Index (OPI) are considered, which is the summation of both indices. A similar approach is carried out for the case with renewable energy penetration. Due to the intermittency nature of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), various contingency ranking lists are prepared. The study found that employing indices in future power systems without considering the intermittent nature of renewable energy could cause problems for power system operators when picking severe contingencies, perhaps compromising the appropriate operators' decision. As a result, in real-time security analysis for practical applications, it is critical to represent the nature of renewables in security indices.
