• The gut-lung axis plays an important role in respiratory health and disease. • Altering gut microbiota is a new option to treat respiratory virus infection. • Rescue WMT might be able to induce improvement in the respiratory spreading disease. • Clinical work-flow of WMT for severe respiratory infection during outbreaks was set.
