Abstract

The General Assembly is composed of all states that are party to the WIPO Convention and that are also members of any of the WIPO-administered Unions. Prior to the adoption of a new treaty, the General Assembly may convene a Diplomatic Conference (a high-level meeting of member states) to finalize negotiations. The secretariat prepares the meetings of the various bodies of WIPO and the Unions and oversees the communication and implementation of decisions. WIPO administers international classifications established by treaties and relating to inventions, marks and industrial designs: periodically it reviews these to ensure their improvement in terms of coverage and precision. WIPO promotes sustainable Technology and Innovation In October 2011, in collaboration with the non-profit organization BIO Ventures for Global Health, the WIPO Research initiative was launched, with the aim of advancing the development of treatments for hitherto neglected tropical diseases through the establishment of partnerships between interested parties.
