Abstract

through a bibliometric analysis. For data collection, the digital platform Scopus was used, which has international recognition as one of the largest repositories of scientific works. Data were collected in July 2020, and the time period considered refers to the period between January 2010 and June 2020. For a more detailed analysis, the ten most cited publications, without distinction of nationality, and the ten most cited documents made in Brazil and/or by Brazilians on the same platform were selected in Scopus. Among the main results of the research, it is observed that most studies on sustainability in rural areas, of Brazilian production, identify themselves as an applied study, differently from international production where theoretical study is what prevails. This behavior may be related to the tradition of the countries of the global north in the cutting-edge scientific production, although in recent years this production is more pulverized, with China rising as an important exponent, especially in this theme.
