Abstract
The main theoretical and pedagogical foundations of Meaningful Physical Education (Meaningful PE) are outlined in this chapter. We begin by articulating the main rationale for prioritizing meaningful experiences in physical education. This provides a platform for identifying potential and desired outcomes of Meaningful PE for participants. We provide distinct characteristics of Meaningful PE and share appropriate teaching and learning principles and strategies. This chapter provides a conceptual and pedagogical foundation upon which to base the practical discussions and decision-making processes highlighted in the chapters that follow.
