Estimation of Genetic Parameters
R. Thompson
Abstract
Estimates of variance components are usually needed for the prediction of breeding values. In this chapter the estimation of variance parameters is considered using univariate sire and animal models. Initially the prediction of variance components from a sire model is considered based on an analysis of variance type of approach. The application of restricted (or residual) maximum likelihood is then presented using an animal model based on the expectation maximization (EM) and average information algorithms.
