Abstract
In present work thin layer of silica nanoparticle was deposited on ITO substrate and used to control the alignment of liquid crystal (LC) for display devices. The prepared cell was analysed by optical microscopy and results indicate that the deposited layer of nanoparticles (NPs) induce the good homeotropic alignment (HA) of nematic LC molecules. The optical textures, conoscopic and phase behaviour are conducted by using the Polarized optical microscope (POM). Further, the effect of applied field on the textural behaviour of prepared LC cell was studied. The fast switching was observed from off state to on state and vice versa, on applied electric field. A slight increase in isotropic temperature of the LC in confined cell was also observed through microscopic study. The method seems to be applicable for the mass production of display devices with HA of LC without using any polymeric material.
