Abstract

The surface of the halloysite nanotubes (Hal) was modified to improve the silver ion loading capacity using (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS). Surface modification of Hal was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The modification of Hal using APTMS improved the silver ion adsorption capacity. The functionalized Hal was used as a nanofiller to make the carrageenan-based composite film . The carrageenan-based films with silver ion loaded APTMS-modified halloysite exhibited increased WCA, UV-light barrier, WVP , and antibacterial activity than their unmodified counterparts. The developed film with superior physical and functional properties is likely to be used for active food packaging applications.
