Abstract
Alcohol is a commonly used psychoactive agent, with up to 40% of people reporting heavy alcohol use or alcohol use disorder during their lifetime.1-3 Alcohol use disorder is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, with up to 5.3% of deaths globally related to alcohol.3,4 Alcohol is also a major contributor to emergency department (ED) visits, accounting for up to 4% of all visits in the United States from 2014 to 2018.4-6
